A special March Break was had by Kanata Division, Trillium Area at Camp Bryerswood. The Theme of the camp was, “ Take a Break Camp”. It was held to help working parents that needed assistance for child care during the March Break period.

A complete program was offered and the children could sleep at camp or come just for the day. Sparks were the only day campers. A special guest visited Camp Bryerswood, Olympic Gold Medalist, Meghan Agosta. She answered questions, signed autographs and showed all the girls her gold medal.

An article was in the Amherstburg Echo newspaper saying that the Kanata Division for Girl Guides held an “Olympic Challenge” for local Guiders with the highlight being a visit from an actual gold medal winning Olympian Meghan Agosta. She played left wing on the 2006 Gold Medal winning Canadian Women’s Hockey Team in Turin, Italy. She told her story to the many girls and Guiders and signed a lot of autographs. This event has been one of many for the 19 year old Rutven native since returning from the Olympics.

Organizers of the camp hoped that Meghan’s visit would provide inspiration for the younger girls and her message and story seemed to play right into that. Meghan said she looked up to players such as Cassie Campbell and by coming to an event like this and having girls look up to her, she hoped it would be beneficial. “If I can inspire them to make their dreams come true, that is a good thing.” She also hopes to be in two or three more Olympics.

Kerry Dinunzio, a member of the seven person organizing committee, said they had girls from all over Essex County ranging from Sparks to Pathfinders at the WAGGGS Olympic challenge.

This event had been in the planning for nearly a year and when Meghan Agosta came home from Italy with the Gold Medal, they tried to get her to come to this event. When we called her up, she was delighted to attend.

The excitement was overwhelming and Kerry Dinunzio believed the visit from Meghan Agosta will prove to be a benefit for the girls. “This will give each child a memory and a dream.” said Kerry.
